For this pop-up talk the illustrated set was designed to add intrigue and captivate the audiences’ attention during the talk or as they wait for the talk to begin.

The set design hints at the ideas being discussed in the talk. Through a large illustrated window backdrop and a 3D paper door set on a globe, the audience can experience Augmented Reality (AR) stop motion illustrations popping out of these 2D and 3D illustrations. This experience is accessed using the App, which can be easily downloaded via the QR code positioned next to the stage and printed on the event programme.

As the door opens a young woman steps out, she has her backpack loaded and walks off into the world.

As you then move your camera up to the window behind the stage, the window opens and you see the young woman then step into the landscape. She pauses to take in the natural world around her and then strides off to explore.

This very interesting talk brings together the conversations of two people from very different paths in life, but both with a mindful questioning of the ideas of what home is. Is home a place or is it a feeling? Is it your personal objects or is it a person or people? In this rapidly more global world, the concept of what home is and the idea of belonging come to the fore. This AR illustration provokes the questions the talk sets out to consider.
